guten tag-ging in germany (pt 1)- berlin
first things first, i've got a total of 500odd pictures i took in germany, plus a whole lot more pics in residing in the hard disks of sam, jo, shuz and nick, so there's no way i'm going to post all of them pictures here. plus, shuz complains that my collages are too many and too small. hmmph! i will try my best to pick out the nicer bits, but otherwise wait till i come home to see the whole motherlode of pictures.
the trip went something like this:
BERLIN- MUNICH (OKTOBERFEST)- SALZBURG (this is austria, not germany for you navigationally-challenged people)- COLOGNE- BERLIN (we had to go back to berlin to fly back to copenhagen from there)

the brandenburg tor (where the east and west german chancellor shook hands to finally reunite germany after the cold war)

tv tower (built by the east germans)
a morose picture of the death strip. try to scale the berlin wall, you get your ass shot off. thats the grey berlin wall next to the cheery double decker tourist bus. isnt it ironic (cue alanis morisette)? thats the only bit of the berlin wall left for posterity. our tour guide told us that the death strip was covered in red sand before, so your footprints would show very clearly if you tried to escape.
whats germany without its food?! ice cream, pretzel, beer, sausages, and my favourite dunkin donuts!!!! oh and just for you nair, nick's eating chinese take out from a chinese take out box.
prints on board the s-bahn (germany either works by bahns (trains) or trams- complicated.)// berlin's bears// drain covers which feature the more prominent sights in berlin//obviously my favourite sight//the hotel which michael jackson infamously attempted to kill his baby from//brandenburg gate towering over me (which begs the qns: what doesnt tower over me?)// me stepping al l over hitler's bunker (really)// communist real estate// everybody needs directions
jasoni, our free berlin tour guide. even though it was free, it was massively solid// cafe alder which was at the corner of checkpoint charlie. the coloured photo is cafe alder today, the black and white one was taken in the days of the DDR. the old place used to be a spy hunting group (CIA, KGB et al.)// checkpoint charlie// humboldt university: ironically its the law faculty im taking a picture of. they used to burn books of the jewish elite in front of the faculty and many many nobel prize winners come from humboldt. SEP here leh!// an underground jewish memorial// berlin opera house: i believe they were staging Carmen that night
:p// lovely night shot of the avenue// museum island with that humongous castle.
unter den linden: my favourite s-bahn stop ( i dont know why, i just like how the name rolls of my tongue)// gd morning from a random train station// we're eating again//berlin hauptbanhof (which means central station)// its a massive station. in size and efficiency. damn, german trains are E-F-F-I-C-I-E-N-T. on time on target, they dont wait. beat that dhoby gaut.// safely on the train: we almost missed it because of our lunch// off to munich!// sam sleeps everywhere at at anytime man// come to daddy! 12 donuts for 8 euros. i like.
ok berlin down, 3 more to go!

berlin:
i posted something from berlin while i was at the hostel (eastseven berlin) and thats pretty much covers what i wanted to say about the place. i really loved berlin, even though we didnt have much time to spend there , because its overwhelming to stand in a place which has been rocked by so much history and yet it still lives on, trudging its way past its former shadows and picking up the pieces. alot of it has been restored but you really cant shake off history like a duck shakes water off its back. bad analogy, but hopefully you get what i mean. anyway, our timing for berlin was just nice, we managed to come in early for the reunification celebrations, by that i mean the reunification of east and west germany (for you non-history people like me) so there was quite a fun night carnival at the brandenburg gate area with LOADS of sausages and crepes. (i'll elaborate on my eating later. i ate SO MUCH in germany. geez.) and live acts! which ranged from the very good to the very bad.
