'twas a fine day out!

well hello christianshavn. its another island connected to denmark, one that i always bypass with the metro on the way to school. today, decided to join sam and some of his classmates to explore the area, filled with little canals and al fresco cafes (ah the cafe culture here!) and out of this world confectionaries (more later).
first off, headed to Vor Frelsers Kirke (aka the Church of Our Saviour) and if you squint or magnify this picture, you can see akane, hide (hee-day), wendy and sam waving frantically at my camera. it was a very long long tough climb on wooden steps which were steep and narrow (worse than my climb at the great wall) and i was gripping onto the railing for dear life.

something of this sort. i dont know how many years they've been here and how much the wood has eroded because of people trooping up and down the stairs each day. it costs 20kr (5sing) to climb the church.

this is a goofy picture of me finally getting to breathe some fresh air after the climb. i did it alone because the rest had gone before. now, i look smilely and happy here in the picture, but my heart was thumping damn fast. it was very high and im kinda afraid of heights. but the view was beautiful:

stupendous! a great view of the rest of copenhagen. only i was too tired and anxious about falling over the railing that i didnt really figure out where was what and how. as u can see, it was a beautiful beautiful day. i appreciate the sun alot more now that im here.

inside the church: its pretty imposing with all these statutes of cherubims and a huge organ behind the pews. and thats the pulpit i guess. some joker was playing on the organ and it sounded so bad. blasphemy!

a collection of sunday school drawings i saw in the church. you can definitely spot noah's ark. :)

thats john 3:16 in danish and inscribed at the huge altar. initially i tried to get my friend to translate it for me, until i saw the verse reference. "men have det evice liv" probably means "but have everlasting life".

after the church we headed down toward denmark's free town of christinia. its a sort of monument and a landmark because its there. its basically something out of a scooby-do set, a place for the alternative lifestylers, and a junkie district. its surrounded by walls and its a little community on its own. the smell of hash was in the air and you see all these people just hanging around smoking listening to reggae etc. i was honestly impressed. impressed that these 'christianites' have been able to hang on for so long onto their land and not be moved out by the government. something like this back home would have been long long gone, or turned into an artificial museum- im thinking something like the little malay town in geylang serai. i mean who goes there anyway! but people still live and reside there, although they need to carry their own gas and stuff. there's a sign on the way out that tells you once u leave christiania, you're going back to the EU again. thats how fiercely their guard their freedom from the State. im just going to leave you to look at the pics, they speak louder and clearer than my pithy descriptions.

dont they look absolutely mouth-watering. i thank God that i was paying attention to the tour guide on the canal tour who said that this was a fantastic cakeshop. i had since forgotten where they were, but when we got out of christianshavn station, voila! it was staring at me in the face. we got a vanilla cream crepe with strawberries (the cream was out of this world. ). then chocolate tart with strawberries (nice thick pastry) and this bigass cake that totally kicked ass. raspberries and cream. and it cost us about 60kr (15sing) for all three of them. very very value for money and yet so so good. the best dessert ive had in a very long time.
